There are very few books that I sit down and read in one day, but this was one of them. Some of the past Pendergrast books have strayed a bit and were not as well done, though I still enjoyed reading them.

In this one, I just couldn’t put it down. I’m not particularly crazy about Africa, but luckily they did not linger there through the whole story. It was just the setup for the rest of the novel which takes place mostly in the deep South. In fact, a lot of it takes place not far from Pendergrast’s New Orleans digs.

Both Vincent and Laura are up front in this one while Pendergrast’s ward Constance, the mysterious girl, is just a subplot. The thing that left me hanging was why he let her be committed and didn’t seem to care what she had done on the ocean voyage home to New York. It was like she was in the story, but just as a distraction. I am not sure where that thread is going but am curious to see how it develops in future novels. As for this story, it just didn’t seem to fit, though there may be a reason for that.

The story is well-paced, the characters interesting, and the resolution satisfying. Of course, that epilogue left unfinished business, but with it being a series, I was not entirely surprised.

There is something about their writing style that is addictive. It was a great way to spend my memorial day. Highly recommended.
